Srinagar, Oct 30 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir Government Thursday said that the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in the Union Territory is under active consideration, with a budget provision of Rs 50 crore already kept for the purpose. In a written reply to an unstarred question tabled by MLA Reyaz Ahmad Khan, the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs informed that the proposal to establish NLU in J&K aims to drive legal education reforms and research in line with Bar Council of India standards and other regulatory bodies. As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the government said that the Hon’ble Chief Minister, in the 2025 Budget speech, had already announced the establishment of a National Law University in the Union Territory. A high-level committee headed by Shantmanu (IAS), Financial Commissioner (Additional Chief Secretary), Higher Education Department, and comprising the Secretary Law, Director Colleges J&K, and HOD Law, University of Kashmir, has examined various aspects related to setting up the NLU.
